Abstract: For a general pair of a given nonconforming and a desired conforming finite element space, we construct and analyze a transfer operator that can be used for a post-processing procedure where a conforming approximation is computed from a nonconforming finite element solution. For this post-processing, we prove local and global estimates of the error between the exact solution and the conforming approximation of the nonconforming discrete solution. Our analysis is independent of the concrete problem that has to be solved. Applications of this analysis are discussed, in particular in the field of a posteriori error control.
Keywords: nonconforming and conforming finite elements, post-processing,error estimates, a posteriori error indicator
